First Territorial Capitol
Utah's first statehouse.

Its lands unequivocally a part of the United States at the end of the Mexican War, Utah became a territory in 1850. The territorial capital was sited at Fillmore, 150 miles south of Great Salt Lake City, and named for Willard Fillmore who appointed Brigham Young first territorial governor.

A fine statehouse was begun but never reached its planned size or opulence.  Within five years the capital was moved to the considerably more convenient location of Salt Lake.
